Aquatic Centers to open with modified schedule in early June
The City of West Des Moines is modifying the open swim schedule for the first two to three weeks of the season for its two aquatic centers.
Parks and Recreation Director Sally Ortgies said staff needs the additional time to finish recruiting enough lifeguards to ensure the safety of pool customers. Once the most recent round of applicants are hired, trained and certified, Ortgies said she is hopeful that both Holiday Park and Valley View Aquatic Centers will be open 7 days a week.
“Ensuring the safety of anyone who uses our aquatic centers is our number one priority,” she said.
Ortgies said the hours at the pools will stay the same; only the number of days will be reduced so that at least one of the two aquatic centers will be open each day of the week.
Under the revised schedule, Holiday Park Aquatic Center, 1701 Railroad Avenue, will open on Saturday, June 3, during regular hours on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Valley View Aquatic Center, 255 81st Street, will open on Sunday, June 4, during regular hours on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.
Swimming lessons will not be affected by the revised schedule. Family Nights on Wednesday and Sunday evenings also will continue at Valley View Aquatic Center.
Ortgies said many cities across the country are having a difficult time recruiting lifeguards. “Young people who typically apply for these positions lead busy scheduled lives and often use summer jobs to start building resumes for their future career,” she said. The metro also is seeing more competition for lifeguards from other cities and private aquatics facilities.
