Updated Information Double Fatality Crash on Interstate 35

The driver of the vehicle traveling south on Interstate 35 in the northbound lanes has been identified as Monte Johnson of Hartford, Iowa, age 49.  The driver of the vehicle traveling north in the northbound lanes has been identified as Nripin Chinni of West Des Moines, age 32.  His passenger, Durga Papina of West Des Moines, age 27 was treated for injuries suffered in the crash.  The circumstances surrounding the crash are still under investigation and more information will be released when it is available.

Double Fatality Crash on Interstate 35

West Des Moines Police responded to a motor vehicle crash on Interstate 35 in the 1600 block at 1:59 AM on Sunday, October 15, 2017.  Preliminary investigation shows that a vehicle was driving south on Interstate 35 in the northbound lanes and collided with another vehicle.  The drivers of both vehicles were killed in the crash.  A passenger in the northbound vehicle suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital.  The crash caused the closure of Interstate 35, but all lanes are now open.  The investigation is ongoing and the names of the people involved in the crash will not be released until all notifications are made.

West Des Moines Police were assisted at the scene by members of the Urbandale Police, Des Moines Police Ident team, Norwalk Police, Clive Police, and the Iowa State Patrol.
