West Des Moines Turns 125!

web banner

On October 9, 1893, Valley Junction was incorporated with a population of 500. Fast forward 125 years and Valley Junction, which was later named West Des Moines, has grown to 130 times that size. Throughout its 125 year existence, West Des Moines has endured floods, hosted national events, been named one of America’s ‘Best Places to Live’, and maintained its commitment to quality education. The steam engines that brought growth and prosperity to Valley Junction have been replaced by data centers and sprawling town centers that now do the landscape of West Des Moines. Businesses and churches have found a home here. Roads have been rerouted, and interstates have been constructed. City officials have been elected and city departments have been created. Parks have been built, and land has been annexed. All that has been done in the last 125 years has created the success story we call West Des Moines.

Help us celebrate West Des Moines’ quasquicentennial year, or what we are calling WDM125, this spring and summer! We’ve planned many events, activities, and reasons to celebrate. Some of the highlighted events are listed here, but look for an individual mailing that will be arriving in your mailbox soon. The mailing will have more details about ways to celebrate WDM125 as well as spotlight WDM125 sponsoring organizations. WDM125 merchandise can be purchased at the West Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department in City Hall (4200 Mills Civic Parkway), at the Historic Valley Junction Foundation Office (137 5th Street), or at the West Des Moines Historical Society’s Jordan House (2001 Fuller Road).
