The West Des Moines Fire Department is staffed with career firefighters assigned to four stations 24 hours a day 7 days a week, 49 firefighters (16 per shift). In addition, about 30 part-time firefighters staff two 12 hour shifts a week. The administrative staff includes a full-time Fire Chief, Fire Marshal, two Fire Inspectors, Training Officer and two Administrative Assistants.

The department is dedicated to saving lives and property and takes pride in the service it provides to the 63,000 citizens of our city. Firefighters perform duties which involve fire suppression, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), HAZMAT first response, extrication, water rescue/recovery, ladder operations, search and rescue, fire inspections, and fire prevention activities for school children and various adult groups.
