City to begin major reconstruction and improvements on 8th Street

Post Date:04/12/2023 2:29 PM
The City of West Des Moines will begin a major reconstruction project on 8th Street between Center Street and Clegg Road.

Work will take place during the 2023 construction season, and to minimize traffic disruption, sections of 8th Street will be closed in stages from north to south. View a map of the 8th Street construction staging plan.

The contractor will be making much needed improvements, including removing pavement and grading the surface, installing new storm sewer structures and pipe to help relieve flooding, modifying watermains, paving the street to improve safety, and installing new traffic signal upgrades to improve traffic flow.

Work will begin in April with one weekend short-term closure of the intersection at 8th Street and Center Street, including the east bound I-235 on-and-off ramps at that intersection. This area will be closed to all traffic, weather permitting, from 7 p.m. on Friday, April 14, to 6 a.m. on Monday, April 17.

The contractor will then move south, and 8th Street will be closed from just south of Center Street to just north of Office Park Road, for up to 3 months. Wayfinding signs and detours will direct traffic so that motorists are able to access all businesses, restaurants and apartments in the area.

Once the section between Center Street and Office Park Road is nearly completed, the contractor will close the intersection of 8th Street and Office Park Road for approximately two weeks, weather permitting. When the intersection is completed, the contractor will reopen the section from Center Street to Office Park Road and close 8th Street from just south of the Office Park Road intersection to north of PPG Paints’ Driveway. This section will remain closed for up to 3 months.

The final stage of the project will close 8th Street south of PPG Paints’ newly constructed driveway to Clegg Road. This stage is anticipated to take up to a month to complete, weather permitting.

Officials expect the entire project to be completed by the end of the 2023 construction season in December.
