The City of West Des Moines is excited to present a unique and impactful program that aims to engage and inspire the next generation of civic leaders – the WDM Youth Civic Accelerator Program.

This immersive program offers a rare opportunity for high school students to gain first-hand experience and insights into the various departments and operations of our city government. By participating in this week-long initiative, students will:

1. Develop a Comprehensive Understanding of Local Government: Through interactive sessions, hands-on activities, and department visits, students will gain a deep appreciation for the roles, responsibilities, and inner workings of city officials and municipal departments.

2. Foster Civic Engagement and Leadership Skills: By interacting with city leaders, professionals, and community members, students will develop essential leadership qualities, communication skills, and a sense of civic responsibility.

3. Explore Career Opportunities in Public Service: Exposure to diverse career paths within local government will inspire students to consider future roles in public service, city planning, community development, and other vital areas.

4. Promote Diversity and Inclusivity: The program will actively seek a diverse group of participants, ensuring that students from various backgrounds and perspectives have the opportunity to contribute and learn from one another.

5. Cultivate Community Pride and Ownership: By gaining a deeper understanding of the city's operations and initiatives, students will develop a sense of pride and ownership in their community, fostering a lifelong commitment to civic engagement.

WDM Youth Civic Accelerator Program 

 

Tentative Dates: June 23-27th

Grades 10-12

8am – 12pm daily

 

Program Overview

The WDM Youth Civic Accelerator Program is a unique opportunity for high school students to gain hands-on experience and insights into the various departments and operations of city government. This immersive program aims to educate and inspire the next generation of civic leaders by providing them with a comprehensive understanding of the inner workings of local government.

 

Program Outline

1. Participant Selection: High school students from various backgrounds and interests will be invited to apply for the program. A competitive selection process will ensure a diverse and motivated group of participants.

2. Mentorship and Guidance: Each participant will be assigned a mentor from the respective city department they are visiting. The mentors will provide guidance, answer questions, and facilitate hands-on learning experiences.

3. Reflection and Feedback: At the end of each day, participants will engage in group discussions and reflections, sharing their insights and experiences. They will also have the opportunity to provide feedback and suggestions for program improvement.

4. Closing Ceremony: The program will culminate in a closing ceremony where participants will receive certificates of completion and have the opportunity to share their experiences and insights with city officials and staff.

By participating in the WDM Youth Civic Accelerator Program, high school students will gain valuable exposure to the diverse roles and responsibilities within local government. This experience will not only enhance their understanding of civic engagement but also inspire them to consider future careers in public service and leadership roles within their communities.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Orientation and Introduction to City Government

- Welcome address by the Mayor/City Manager

- Overview of the city's organizational structure and departments

- Presentation on the roles and responsibilities of city officials

- Tour of City Hall (possible Citywide Tour)

 

Day 2: Public Works and Infrastructure

- Visit to the Public Services Department

- Hands-on activities related to infrastructure maintenance and planning

- Meet with civil engineers and discuss their roles in infrastructure design and construction

- Learn about the use of technology and specialized equipment in public works operations

- Gain insights into the diverse range of careers within the public works sector

 

Day 3: Public Safety and Emergency Services

- Visit the Police Department, Fire & EMS Department(s)

- Demonstrations by emergency response teams – SERT, K-9, Technical Rescue Operations, Emergency Medical Operations

- Discussions on community policing and emergency preparedness and emergency medical care

 

Day 4: Community Development and Economic Growth

- Visit with the Economic Development Department and Development Services

- Discussions on business attraction and retention strategies

- Presentations on tools city planners use to guide development within the city

- Engage with city planners to understand the long-term vision for urban development

- Hands-on planning exercise

 

Day 5: Parks, Recreation, and Community Enrichment Departments

- Activity: RP Kids Camp Introduction/assist @RecPlex

- Discuss the department's long-term planning for park development, parkland dedication, and facility upgrades @ RecPlex

- Site Tours: Raccoon River Park, Holiday Park Aquatic Center, American Legion Park/Wilson Park

- Visit the City Library engage with library staff, learn operations/programming and tour library

- Graduation
