Building Partnerships in the Community
The success of many programs and events at West Des Moines Human Services depends on the help of our dedicated volunteers. Each individual who volunteers at West Des Moines Human Services has unique skills and life experiences to offer - all of which are necessary and valuable in meeting the needs of other individuals in the community. If you have a few hours per month, we have a rewarding experience to offer you! Volunteers are currently needed in our Food Pantry and Clothing Closet as well as for special events throughout the year. Please click on the links below for more information. Volunteer opportunities are available Monday through Friday between 8:30 am and 3:00 pm as well as on Tuesdays from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. Volunteers must be age 14 or older. Volunteer prospects are required to complete a volunteer application, release and a background check. Whether you are looking for a weekly 2 to 3 hour shift, or would just like to volunteer on an on-going intermittent basis, we want you to join our team!
Weekday Opportunities - Volunteer opportunities are available Monday through Friday between 8:30 am and 3:00 pm as well as Tuesdays from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Please note, we do not offer one-time volunteer opportunities in our Food Pantry or Clothing Closet - for these areas, we require either a regular weekly commitment or an ability to volunteer on an on-going, intermittent/sub basis.
Evening Opportunities - we have expanded our Food Pantry and Clothing Closet hours to include Tuesday evenings from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. This opportunity does not require a long-term commitment and sign-up is on a month-to-month basis.
High School Students - Tuesday evening volunteer opportunities from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm are available in our Clothing Closet from September through May for student volunteers ages 14 or older seeking Silver Cord hours. Volunteers are required to complete both a student volunteer application and a release form. Volunteers under the age of 18 also need a parent or guardian's signature on the release form. We also offer off-site opportunities including creating birthday kits for our Birthday Heroes Program.
College Students - volunteer opportunities for college students are available in our Clothing Closet and Food Pantry. Volunteers are required to complete both a student application and a release form as well as completing a background check.
VTO/Corporate Volunteerism - volunteer opportunities for individuals wishing to use employer-sponsored VTO hours are available for our seasonal distribution events (school supplies, winter coats, holiday programs).
Court-Ordered Community Service - please note, we are no longer accommodating those in need of court-ordered community service hours. Please visit the United Way of Central Iowa site to find agencies that facilitate court-ordered hours.
For additional information, please contact us.
