CPR FOR EVERY NEED
The City of West Des Moines Emergency Medical Services is proud to offer CPR courses from the American Heart Association (AHA). City instructors are paramedics and certified to teach by the AHA. Course completion cards are valid for two years and are emailed shortly after your class is completed. All classes and testing are conducted at our training center at 8055 Mills Civic Parkway unless other arrangements are made.
Which Course Is Right For You?
For CPR certification, you may either take BLS or Heartsaver CPR. The course you choose depends on the requirements for your certification, either from your employer or a licensing bureau. Please confirm your requirements prior to registering for a course. If a certification card is not required, you may also choose to learn CPR skills via a Family & Friends course.
Call 515-273-0768 or email Julie Powell to register for classes.
Basic Life Support
The Healthcare Provider course is meant for persons who provide healthcare as part of their job responsibilities. Healthcare providers generally work for emergency medical services, hospitals, medical/dental clinics, etc. BLS certification is also required for entrance into many healthcare training programs and college courses.
This course teaches adult, child and infant CPR/AED with mask and BVM, as well as choking management for adults, children and infants.
Heartsaver CPR/AED (with or without First Aid)
Heartsaver is designed for employees who have a duty or desire to respond to a first aid emergency because of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements. Other non-medical personnel who often take Heartsaver courses include coaches, personal trainers, scout leaders, foster parents and childcare providers. First aid may also be a required component of your certification--please check requirements. First Aid training is also available separately from CPR training.
This course teaches adult, child and infant CPR/AED and choking management.
Family & Friends CPR
Family & Friends CPR is a two-hour classroom course that teaches the basic skills of CPR and choking management for adults, children, and infants, as well as some basic first aid, all in a fun and non-threatening environment. This program can be a cost-effective, non-credentialed option for teaching lifesaving skills in your workplace, to a neighborhood or association meeting, parent/teacher meeting, church staff/membership, babysitters, parents, grandparents, or to children as young as 10. Individuals may register for available classes, or groups may schedule a dedicated class, depending on your needs.
