Making Decisions for a Growing Community

The Mayor and City Council serve on the legislative and policy-making body for the City of West Des Moines. As elected representatives of the citizens, the Mayor and City Council provide the policy direction and program guidance necessary to direct the community's economic, social and physical development.

The Mayor and two council members are elected at-large, while the other three council members are elected by ward. The Mayor, with approval of the Council, appoints members of policy-making boards and commissions of the City.

The major responsibilities of the Mayor and City Council include enacting ordinances, setting property tax rates, approving City service levels, authorizing the budget, and participating in community economic development efforts.
