West Des Moines, IA
Home Menu115-117 Fifth Street
Evaluation:
This is a contributing Fifth Street building within the historic district. Later in date (1942-49) it represents later commercial infill that replaced lost frame store buildings. It is of some special interest as it housed a state liquor store postwar. Its construction date and the date of its present storefront need to be reviewed.***

Physical Description:
This is a later single-story double storefront veneered in a blonde-gold colored brick. The core measures 50 feet by 109 feet. The storefronts are mirror imaged with book end entrances, intervening elevated rectangular windows and a substantial blank wall segment. Both storefronts now have fixed awnings.
Documented Alterations:
The existing storefront plan likely dates to October 1959 (permit). Permits note electrical work in 1966 and 1978. The double storefront appears to have been re-fronted.
