The Primary mission of the West Des Moines Fire Department Training Division is to provide on-going training, education and certification to fire service personnel necessary to insure a competent, efficient and effective emergency response organization. It is the further mission of this division to provide the necessary research, evaluation and recommendations for new products and procedures necessary to maintain a state-of-the-art emergency response organization.

The Training Division conducts extensive training in order to maintain operational readiness for our department. A minimum of weekly training sessions are also provided to all part-time firefighters. Topics range from basic fire science to technical rescue classes, as well as officer/supervisor development.

The training division is under the direction of Deputy Chief Scott McFarland. The department has a “training group” identifying and planning needed training and serving as a liaison to the department.

The department enjoys the use of a training tower, drill grounds with various simulators and a classroom.  This tower and training grounds are located at Fire Station 17.
