Community Police Academy: The West Des Moines Police Department began a yearly Community Police Academy in 2002. The goal of the academy is to provide an educational program that allows citizens to learn first-hand about police operations and achieve a better understanding of law enforcement challenges, functions and opportunities. 

The Community Police Academy is provided in the spring and all applicants must be 18 years of age or older, have no history of criminal behavior and pass a background check.
