As our community is aware, the tragic school shooting in Perry yesterday left our local communities, state, and nation shocked, saddened and grieving from such a senseless act of violence.  This heinous act targeted children and educators, who should feel a sense of safety and security while attending their local schools.  Like all of you, the West Des Moines Police Department stands in solidarity with the victims, the City of Perry, and all who were affected by this immense tragedy.  We will continue to provide any support necessary to all that were affected while they grieve and work to heal from this heartbreaking incident.

Since this horrific event transpired, there have been reports of comments circulating both in person and online, in support of the suspect who carried out this violent act.  Last night, the West Des Moines Police Department received information of social media comments made by an individual threatening violence at one of our community schools.  West Des Moines Detectives, in conjunction with the FBI, immediately initiated an investigation and located the suspect.  After a thorough investigation, at approximately 6:45pm, West Des Moines Police detectives arrested Lakeeve Arlley Fort, 18 of West Des Moines on the following charge:

Threat of Terrorism - Class D Felony

Fort was transported to the Polk County Jail where he was booked and incarcerated on the charge.

The West Des Moines Police Department would like to take this opportunity to remind anyone who engages in or considers making threatening comments of violence towards others in any fashion, will be held legally accountable for such actions.  Keeping our community safe and secure is our top priority.  We will work tirelessly to make sure our schools, businesses, and neighborhoods are protected from such threats and violent actions.  The West Des Moines Police Department will have no tolerance for these kinds of threats or actions in our community.

If anyone encounters or becomes aware of threatening comments or behavior, please immediately contact the West Des Moines Police Department or your local law enforcement agency.

The charges against the defendant are merely accusations, and the defendant is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
