Officers employed by the City of West Des Moines are available to work assignments for members of the public and organizations as needed to provide additional police services. To request an officer, please fill out this form and verify that the requirements for hiring an officer will be met prior to the work being available for assignment to officers. Listed below are the requirements set by the City of West Des Moines (the City) and the West Des Moines Police Benevolent Association (WDMPBA) for employment of off-duty officers.

Each officer shall be paid at a rate of $65.00 per hour with a three (3) hour minimum for each job as set forth by WDMPBA. Officers working off-duty during any of the following holidays shall be compensated at a rate of $90.00 per hour for the length of the job: New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, Friday following Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day.

Effective July 1, 2025, the rate for off-duty employment will be $75 per hour for the standard rate and $100 per hour for holiday or emergency requests.

If a job shift begins on a non-holiday, and goes past midnight into a holiday, the rate for the entire job will be at holiday pay rate.

Emergency requests, defined as requests with a start date of less than 72 hours notice, shall be billed at the rate of $90.00 per hour per officer with a three hour minimum. Employers may opt to offer higher rate of pay based on demand, urgency, time of day, or event type, however the minimum rate is set forth above.

Payment is expected to be received at the conclusion of the job, directly to the officers, unless other arrangements are made prior to the start of the job, as indicated below.

If an employer cancels a job after the assignment window, the employer is responsible for a three (3) hour payout to each off-duty officer assigned to the job.  The assignment window is defined as noon (12:00 PM) on the third day preceding the job until the start time of the job.

Once the off-duty officer(s) arrive(s) at the job location, the officer shall be compensated for the entire agreed upon or contracted time.

Officers are not allowed nor expected to participate in any activity which is not police related in nature.
If a work request cannot be filled by a City of West Des Moines Police Officer, the job may be offered to officers of a neighboring jurisdiction.  This will be facilitated by West Des Moines Police personnel, unless specifically declined.

A good faith effort will be made to fill the requested job position(s), but neither the City nor the WDMPBA are under any obligation to fill the positions requested.
