Sidewalks are an integral part of the transportation system for the City of West Des Moines, allowing walking and jogging that is safely separated from vehicular traffic. City Council has responded to the importance placed on quality sidewalks by our residents by initiating a City Sidewalk Program. The City continues the sidewalk program in an effort to provide safe public walkways. As citizens of West Des Moines it is our responsibility to help maintain our City. This is an area that each property owner can assist with by taking proactive steps to maintain their sidewalks.
The City Sidewalk Program
- Provides a means of reviewing the condition of existing sidewalks and the need for new sidewalks
- Annual program - a different area of the City scheduled for inspection each year
Sidewalk Improvement Location Schedule |
- Scheduled area is reviewed by staff and notices of defects are sent to the property owner of record
- Residents are encouraged to repair deficiencies on their own
- If repairs are not completed by the property owner within the allotted timeframe, the City will have the sidewalk repaired and invoice the property owner.
- If the invoice is not paid after 30 days, the amount owed will be certified to the County Auditor to be added to the property tax.
