Solid waste collection service is available to West Des Moines residents living in single family homes up to and including 4-plex units.  Metro Waste Authority administers the City's residential solid waste disposal.

Solid waste collection service is set up through West Des Moines Water Works. Charges for this service are included on your municipal services bill. If you need to start, stop, change your service (size of solid waste cart), or report a damaged solid waste cart please contact Metro Waste Authority at 515-244-0021 or visit whereitshouldgo.com. 

Two sizes of garbage carts are available:

• 96 Gallon
• 48 Gallon

Solid waste should be put out to the curb no earlier than 5:00 PM the day before scheduled pick-up day, and no later than 6:00 AM on the day of collection

Large Items and Extra Waste

Have more waste than your cart will hold? West Des Moines residents may place extra boxes or bags of garbage outside of their solid waste cart provided a sticker is attached. These items must have a six foot (6') clearance from your solid waste cart.  Visit MWA Extra Trash & Large Items collection for complete details on how many stickers per item are required and where to purchase the stickers. 

Additional Waste Collection Information

All items put out for collection should be secured to eliminate the likelihood of litter, with cart lids closed. All garbage in your cart must be in bags.
