2023 PCC patching program

Project Overview: The project will include approximately 178 linear feet (LF) of PCC curb and gutter replacement, 9,195 Square Yards (SY) of 7" Reinforced PCC Full Depth Patching, 638 SY of 8" Reinforced PCC Full Depth Patching, 327 SY of 8" 5-hour Reinforced PCC Full Depth Patching, 1,110 SY of 9" Reinforced PCC Full Depth Patching, 392 SY of 9" 5-Hour Reinforced PCC Full Depth Patching, 147 SY of 11" Reinforced Full Depth Patching, Intake Reconstruction, Manhole Adjustments, Traffic Control, and other miscellaneous work within the City of West Des Moines, Iowa.

 

Project Status: The contractors are working on miscellaneous punch list items on the various locations.  Restoration efforts are also taking place in coordination with the punch list items.

Athene PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE AT RACCOON RIVER PARK

Ribbon Cutting; Thursday, November 21, 2024; 3:30 pm

Project Overview: The project includes the construction of a new pedestrian bridge over the Raccoon River connecting the Raccoon River Park area to the Walnut Woods State Park area. This is one of the Five Waters projects identified as part of the Local Option Sales Tax Campaign. The project will also include modifications to the existing multi-use trail within the Raccoon River Park as well as an extension of multi-use trail on the south side of the Raccoon River to connect to SE Walnut Woods Drive and/or Walnut Woods State Park. A separate web page https://www.wdm.iowa.gov/government/five-waters-project has been set up to allow the public to monitor the progress of the project and routine drone flights are being posted for those interested in seeing the progress.

 

The Iowa DOT construction contract is set at 215 working days with an anticipated completion by fall 2024.

 

Project Status:  The bridge fence installation process is still on-going.  All the concrete for the new PCC trail has been placed.  The backfilling, grading, and seeding is mainly completed, a few areas are left to address once weather allows.  Restoration efforts will be monitored through the spring.  The trees along the trail have been planted.  The aesthetic signage and donor plates are being installed in their respective places as well.  The limestone bench is being installed along the existing aggregate trail.

SOUTH GRAND PRAIRIE PARKWAY FROM GRAND AVENUE TO RACCOON RIVER Drive Estimated Start: Fall 2022

Project Overview: Construct South Grand Prairie Parkway from Raccoon River to Grand Avenue including all materials, labor, and equipment necessary for installation of approximately: 4,351 LF of storm sewer with 38 structures, 328,089 CY of grading, 8 Acres of grubbing, 27,316 SY of PCC pavement, 441’ x 42’ pretensioned prestressed concrete beam bridge, 85 LF reinforced concrete box culvert, 22 Acres of surface restoration, erosion control including 7,866 ton of riprap, macadam stone, and erosion stone, joint utility trench, pavement markings, traffic control and miscellaneous related work and appurtenances.

 

Project Status: Raccoon River Drive is open to all traffic; this includes the new jug handle that connects Raccoon River Drive to S Grand Prairie Parkway. Restoration efforts will continue through the fall into the winter.

8th street reconstruction

Project Overview: This project will be a complete reconstruction of 8th Street from I-235 to Clegg Road. This will include new paving, storm sewer, traffic signals and turf restoration. The project will be split into three main stages.

 

 

Project Status: Miscellaneous punch list items are being worked on including establishing vegetation growth along Center Street.

2024 STREET RECONSTRUCTION PROGRAM (28TH STREET AND VINE STREET)  

Estimated Start: Spring 2024

Estimated Completion: Fall 2024

Contractor: Alliance Construction Group

 

Project Overview: The project involves removing and reconstructing 28th Street from Meadow Lanes to Giles Street, and Vine Street from just east of the 16th Street intersection to near the middle of the 14th Street intersection. The existing roadway pavement will be removed and replaced with Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) pavement, which will include the preparation of subbase material. Storm sewer piping will be added, sanitary sewer manholes will be replaced, some sanitary sewer services will be replaced, and a few fire hydrants will be relocated. Affected driveway approaches will be replaced and sidewalk ramps near intersections will be modified to be ADA compliant.  The project also includes surface restoration, traffic control, and other related work.

 

Project Status:  Only site restoration efforts are left to be completed on both Vine Street and 28th Street.  Vegetation growth will be monitored through the winter into the spring to ensure adequate establishment. 

 

Any irrigation system (lines or heads) or invisible dog fence that are in the public right-of-way are susceptible to damage and are the responsibility of the property owner to repair.  These lines are not part of the Iowa One Call system and are often in direct conflict with the necessary work and are unavoidable.  When you see us working in front of your property, please turn off the system so that the contractor is not delayed.  The contractor will be responsible for turf restoration for the areas that are disturbed.

2024 Parking lot repairs phase 2

Project Overview: This project will include the following work located at various locations throughout the city of West Des Moines. The project contains approximately 1,102 (SY) of 8” Reinforced PCC Full Depth Patching, 271 (SY) of 6” Reinforced Pavement, 19 (LF) of PCC Curb and Gutter, 224 (SY) OF 5” Reinforced PCC Sidewalk, 3 (LS) Accessible Entry Landing Ramps and Stairs, Intake Adjustments, Valve Box Adjustments, Clearing and Grubbing, Traffic Control, and other miscellaneous work.

 

Project Status: The contractor has completed the removals and installation of the new PCC pavement on the west and south side of the fire and EMS administration building on 5th Street.  The contractor is currently reconstructing the east front stairs and sidewalk for the building.  This work should wrap up in the next week or so.  The sidewalk has been reconstructed near 525 5th Street with the installation of a slotted drain to help ensure drainage in the area.  The contractor has started saw cutting patch locations at Fire Station No. 19 at 8055 Mills Civic Parkway.  The contractor will remove the old concrete and place new concrete at this location in the coming weeks.   Work is performed in a strategic manner to cause as little impact for accesses to the affected business/buildings as possible.  This also includes the fire station to ensure proper execution of the emergency vehicles and personnel.   All sites will be restored prior to the cold winter months and monitored through the spring to ensure proper vegetative growth.

2023 Channel repair program

Project Overview: The project involves repairing deteriorated storm sewer infrastructure, impaired streambanks, and protecting sanitary sewer infrastructure at seven locations in the City. To repair storm sewer infrastructure, work includes removing and replacing, resetting, and installing new pipe sections, removing and replacing failed flared end sections, installing outlet protection including revetment stone to protect the storm sewer and prevent erosion. To repair stream banks and protect sanitary sewer infrastructure, the work includes revetment stone placement, including excavation, to reinforce and inhibit further erosion of the streambank areas adjacent to City infrastructure. Associated site work improvements include erosion controls, clearing and grubbing, surface restoration, seeding, removal and replacement of sidewalk pavement, and other related work.  

 

Project Status: The contractor has completed all seven sites to date.  Vegetative growth is being monitored.

Project Status: This project has been awarded. The contractor is to determine a schedule.

2024 hma resurfacing program

Project Overview: The project will remove and replace various critical areas of HMA pavement throughout the City of West Des Moines.  In addition, asphalt overlays will be performed in the appropriate locations.  This work includes replacing or adjusting watermain, storm, and sanitary sewer structures affected by the work.  Also, the project will entail new PCC sidewalk with detectable warning, crack and joint sealing, pavement markings, surface milling, and other miscellaneous work related.   

 

Project Status: In the coming weeks, the contractor will perform manhole, intake, and sidewalk adjustments on S 50th Street from Grand Avenue to Plumwood Drive, Sugar Creek Drive between S 93rd Street and Arrow Leaf Lane, Westown Parkway between 60th Street and West Lakes Parkway, and West Lakes Parkway south of Westown Parkway. All project sites will be restored prior to winter.

2023 Sewer Manhole Rehabilitation Program

Project Overview: This project will rehabilitate existing sewer manholes in The City of West Des Moines.  The rehabilitation consists of lining the manholes with cementitious and epoxy materials to ensure efficient and leak proof performance of the structures.

 

Project Status: The contractor finished performing the cementitious repairs and epoxy coating of each manhole in the project scope.  The project is estimated at 90% complete.

Mills civic parkway - sugar creek & Fox crossings

Project Overview: Construction of new a Sugar Creek bridge, new Fox Creek culvert, and Sugar Creek bank stabilization as part of the Mills Civic Parkway Reconstruction from South 91st Street to SGPP (South Grand Prairie Parkway).  Construction of the bridge will accommodate initial reconstruction of the southern 3 lanes only.  The remainder of the Mills Civic Parkway Reconstruction will be addressed on another project.

 

Project Status: Backfilling for the first phase (southern portion) of the box culvert has started.  Once the backfilling is completed, the gas line can be relocated to its proper location over the box culvert.  Phase 2 will start in the spring.  The bridge contractor has been installing the decking for the new slab bridge.

Valley Junction Alleys Phase 8

Project Overview: The project involves paving various alleys in the Valley Junction neighborhood.  These locations include the alleys between 1st & 2nd Street, 3rd & 4th Street, and 13th & 14th Street.  Improvements to the existing alleys include grading, paving, storm sewer, subdrain, and surface restoration.  The existing granular portion of the alley will be removed, graded, and paved with concrete.  The contractor will work within the existing right-of-way and temporary easements, clean-up and backfill with dirt, and seed all areas disturbed by construction activity. 

 

Project Status: This project is complete. Restoration and vegetation growth will be monitored through the fall and winter.

Stagecoach Drive – S 78TH STREET TO S 81sT STREET

Project Overview: This project includes the construction of Stagecoach Drive from South 78th Street to South 81st Street.  The new section of Stagecoach Drive will ultimately have 5 lanes with only 3 lanes constructed initially.  The project also includes a new trail, watermain, and fiber conduit network.

 

Project Status: The roadway is open to traffic. Restoration efforts are on-going and vegetation growth will be monitored.

WRA SUgar creek improvements phase 2

Project Overview: This is a Des Moines Metropolitan Wastewater Reclamation Authority (WRA) project within The City of West Des Moines. This project involves restoration and stabilization of Sugar Creek between Mills Civic Parkway and Stagecoach Drive. The improvements include shaping stream banks to milder stable slopes, removal of trees within this grading area, installing significant amount of rock to protect the bank from erosion, establishing native vegetation to reduce erosion and enhance water quality benefits, planting trees where feasible in the upper portion of the stream corridor, raising a couple of sanitary manholes to grade, and removal/abandonment of a couple of water wells. 

 

Project Status: Tree clearing and grinding is complete.  Once the mulch piles are hauled off the project, the creek banks can be graded.  This work will also include the installation of rip rap on the banks to help stabilize the banks.  This work will start from the south end and move towards the north.

Project Overview: Project location is identified as a water access point in the Iowa Confluence Water Trails (ICON) master plan and will further expand recreational access to the Raccoon River. Proposed improvements will include a parking lot, access drive, site signage, paved river access along, native plantings, and a portable restroom with enclosure.

 

Project Status: Concrete boat ramp, parking lot, and access drive off 1st Street has been constructed but are not currently available for public use. Lighting along 1st street is being installed and site restoration and erosion control are planned to continue into spring, 2025.

pearson park north and south bridge replacement

Project Overview: Removal of both the south and north existing timber pedestrian bridges at Pearson Park. The southern existing bridge crosses over an unnamed tributary and will be removed and replaced with a prefabricated pedestrian bridge.  The northern existing bridge crosses over Blue Creek and will be removed.  The nearby existing twin 66" RCP culvert will be extended and the walkway will be realigned at an at-grade crossing over the new culvert extension. Other improvements include grading and channel revetment.

 

Project Status: Project work is complete and open for use. Remaining site restoration will be completed spring, 2025.

Project Overview: Construction of Ashawa and Wild Rose Parks Play Equipment, including all materials, labor, and equipment necessary for site demolition/preparation, sediment/erosion control, and construction of new playgrounds at each park site in the same location as the existing playgrounds. Improvements include, generally: removal/replacement of some PCC walks, drives and curbs, removal/replacement of play equipment, PIP rubber and rubber tile playground surfacing, PCC beam curbs, site amenities, sod/plantings, and all other associated work to complete the playground replacement projects as noted in Contract Documents.

 

Project Status: Project is currently out to bid with contract award to potentially follow.

RACCOON RIVER PARK PLAYGROUND REPLACEMENT

Project Overview:  The entire playground will be replaced in the same general location. The new playground will include new inclusive play equipment, poured-in-place rubber & synthetic turf surfacing, new sidewalks, seat walls, benches, site amenities, and landscaping.

SCENIC VALLEY PARK COURTS AND TRAIL

Project Overview:  This project consists of removal and replacement of the loop asphalt trail and basketball court, along with two (2) new standalone pickleball courts at Scenic Valley Park. 

 

Project Status: Contractor plans to begin demolition of trail and basketball court around April 1, 2025.

2024 PLAYGROUND REPLACEMENT PROJECT - CROSSROADS, JAYCEE, AND KIWANIS PARKS Estimated Start:   Spring 2024

Project Overview:  Project consists of replacement of the playgrounds at Crossroads, Jaycee, and Kiwanis Park. The new playground will be replaced within the same general footprint as the existing playground.  The new playground will include new inclusive play equipment, poured-in-place rubber surfacing, new sidewalks, benches, site amenities, and landscaping. 

 

Project Status: See below on status for each location. 

 

Crossroads Park:

Playground is open to the public following completion on the safety testing and inspection of the play equipment on 10/14/24.

Playground is open to the public following completion on the safety testing and inspection of the play equipment on 10/14/24. Entrance to parking lot will remain closed for 72 hours to allow new concrete driveway to properly cure.

SOUTHWOODS PARK DISC GOLF EXPANSION

Project Overview:  Expansion of disc golf course from current 9-holes to 18 holes. 1st phase will consist of clearing of underbrush within new fairways. Future phases will involve setting of new tee pads and baskets and wayfinding signage. 

 

Project Status:   Course is open to the public and permanent course signage has been completed.

SOUTHWOODS PARK SINGLETRACK TRAIL Project

Project Overview:  Project consists of construction of approximately 1.6 miles of new, natural surface singletrack trails at Southwoods Park (350 S. 35th St). Trails will consist of approximately 0.6-mile trail loop suitable for beginner/novice users (green loop on singletrack trails plan) and a 1-mile trail loop suitable for intermediate users (blue loop) which includes alternative trail features such as a rock drop and rock skinny.

 

Project Status: The Phase 2 Blue Trail is complete and open for use along with the green trail. Trail way-finding signage is planned to be installed this fall/winter.

Valley View Park Central Grading and Pickleball Parking Estimated Start:  Spring 2024

Project Overview:  Project consists of site grading for central area, installation of utilities to support future shelter and restroom facility, paving of the pickleball parking lot and trails at Valley View Park (255 88th Street).     

 

Project Status: Project is substantially complete and the parking lot is open for use. Remaining punchlist items will be completed this fall. Any areas needing reseeded will be completed in the spring.
