Street cleaning in West Des Moines involves cleaning arterial streets, residential streets, Valley Junction business area streets and alleys, and randomly assigned City parking lots. Approximately 450 lane miles of streets and more than 150 cul-de-sacs are routinely cleaned by the City.
Zoned areas are assigned for cleaning April 1 through December 1, weather permitting. Each Spring, a Street Cleaning Schedule is published showing zoned areas and weekly schedules for these zones. Arterial and residential streets are swept once every 5-6 weeks. The Valley Junction business area streets are swept every 2 weeks. Unless unforeseen circumstances or poor weather conditions hinder normal sweeping activities, this schedule will be adhered to.
