The City created the Bicycle Advisory Commission in 2011. This 7-member commission is charged with advising the City Council on bicycle plans, programs, and policies. At least 6 of the 7 members of the commission must reside within the City of West Des Moines. Commission members serve 3-year terms.
The Commission meets the first Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the West Des Moines City Council Chambers located in City Hall, 4200 Mills Civic Parkway.

In 2014 the Bicycle Master Plan Task Force was formed to update the Bicycle Master Plan plan originally prepared in February 2011 and to develop a Complete Streets Policy. On Tuesday, July 28, 2015, members of the Task Force hosted a Public Open House to gather feedback on the revised Bicycle Master Plan and Complete Streets Policy.
