In the world of EMS, a bystander is typically considered anyone who is present for or witness to an emergency that is not the patient. This includes family members, friends, people who call 911, and people who simply pass by. Bystanders play a key role in an effective emergency response system, which relies on a reporting party as well as assistance prior to the arrival of first responders.
